Atakunmosa Local Government was created in 1976 as a result of the major local government reforms embarked upon nationwide by the then military administration. In December 1996, the old Atakunmosa Local Government metamorphosed into two councils, namely Atakunmosa West Local Government which retained the old headquarters at Osu, along old Ile-Ife / Ilesa road and Atakunmosa East Local Government with headquarters at Iperindo. Atakunmosa West Local Government is regarded as the gateway to Ijesa-land by virtue of its location. The local government has a population density of about 120 per square kilometers, according to 1991 population census.
